Growing A House Plant At Home

A money plant can be grown any time of the year irrespective of the season. The plant can be grown in direct sunlight as well as indirect sunlight but excess sunlight may be harmful by turning the leaves yellow and might even burn them.

These plants are probably the easiest houseplants to propagate from cuttings. The cuttings can root in the soil, a soilless medium, and water as the money plants are hydroponic in nature. New plants from seeds is also possible but takes time.

Propagate your plants in a small container or a bottle in the water and then move it to a larger pot. A container that’s 8-10 inches in depth is fine and will provide enough room for roots.

Once your plant develops roots, it's ready to transplant into a larger container. Choose a container with drainage holes at the bottom, and if you reuse the pot, make sure it’s free from any foulness. If the plant outgrows it's pot, a larger pot is needed.

Although house plants do well even without fertilizing, you can boost the plant’s growth by fertilizing, especially if the soil lacks nutrients. Use a well balanced all-purpose fertilizer.

Growing a money plant in water is no different from growing them in soil. In fact, the growth requirements and plant care in water are the same as that of other plants in soil.

When To Repot A Money Plant

Repot your plant if you see leaf discoloration, stunted growth, wilting, and compacted soil. Other signs may not be so easy to see, and you would need to examine your plant’s root system. It's best if you also aimed to repot your plant every 2 years.

If your plant looks like it is about to step out of its pot and walk away, it is a good time for repotting. An overgrown house plant may have roots starting to peer from the drainage holes to seek more space. Also, your plant will start to look rather big.

If you have been watering your plant and giving it the right amount of sun and nutrients and it is still not growing, it is a good sign that your plant needs to be repotted.

One of the signals that your money plant is in distress is in the leaves. Yellow and brown discoloration combined with crowding in the pot are signs that your plant needs to be repotted. The pressure of the roots on your pot may also cause it to bulge.

If you are still unsure as to whether it is time to re-house your plant, you can carefully remove the plant from its container by holding the sides and tipping it upside down.

Examine the roots to check for rot or pests. If your plant is pot-bound, you will observe that the roots have taken the shape of the container. Gently tease apart roots before re-potting.
